But what about in the future? What if the tools we use are compromised or even banned? What then? What if all we have is email as a communication medium?
The answer to this problem is relatively simple.
You can encrypt your private communications before you press send. There are an abundance of tools out there that will let you do just that. In fact the list is long and the majority of these tools are constantly being updated against threats.

One of the most prevalent ways to achieve communication privacy is to use public key cryptography. This, at it's most basic, is a way of encrypting text with your own personal key. That text can then only be decrypted by someone with your public key. When encrypting a message to someone you use their public key alongside your private key so that only the intended recipient can read what you have written. It's a beautifully simple concept but amazingly secure. Of course I have only outlined this process basically, there is more you can do with your keys such as verify that you are who you say you are and verify other people also.

The biggest problem has been the implementation of this method of encryption. In the past it was a real pain to get it up and running but more recently it's become a lot simpler. It's worth remembering that it only needs to be set up once. From then on integration with software such as email is straightforward. You can also export your keys to some online services.

On Linux I use GNUPG which is an open source and free implementation of the PGP standard. I'm not sure what there is for Mac and Windows but there is software and apps that let you create keys. There are also apps for Android.

It's definitely worth your time doing a bit of research into how to add GPG / PGP to your communications on your platform but it isn't the only way of encrypting messages before sending them. You can choose what is right for you from the plethora of tools available.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-9635790396321468342023-10-21T07:32:00.000+01:002023-10-21T07:33:16.984+01:00The Bleedin' Obvious

The first rule of cryptography for personal use is use what you have.

Cryptography can be a deep and complex subject and the very thought of implementing something that complicated into everyday life can seem so daunting that people just don't bother to look at the obvious.
On your phone, tablet or PC there will be something in place already that will get you up and running. After a bit of investigating and searching online it would seem that this problem is not uncommon. Apparently the capacitor in the foot pedal dies and then needs to be replaced in order to rectify the situation. I've ordered said capacitor and now I'll have to wait until next weekend to perform the required surgery.

At least I know that the machine is running because while it was chugging along on its own I managed at least to wind a bobbin. No weird electrical smells coming from the machine. Only the pedal.
I have achieved one thing with this machine today. It's clean. There's no amount of fluff that you can pull from a sewing machine. Once I got started I kept finding more. After about an hour I was satisfied that the tweezers, paint brush and cotton buds had retrieved every bit of cruft that I was likely to find this time around.

If the fix works I'll be very happy to have only spent £4. If not then I have eliminated one possible cause of the fault, the next potential solution I suspect will cost a lot more.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-65241683095837943392023-07-09T15:19:00.000+01:002023-07-09T15:19:03.728+01:00Keep It Simple

More often than not I'm thinking about privacy and especially cryptographic functions that enable it.

At the beginning of the year I was in a truck waiting to be unloaded and started thinking about creating secure passwords from simple inputs. Previously I had used Sundog to make patterns, which it is extremely good at. Then I'd export the MIDI file and try to use another piece of software to get the patterns into one of my QY sequencers. The problem is that the software I own doesn't seem to like sending MIDI clock messages that would start the QY recording when I pressed play on the software. There were work-arounds that would do the job but if was a faff getting everything to sync.

Today I noticed that Sundog has a check box for sending MIDI clock messages. I'd never used it because I had always intended to export the MIDI. Anyway, I hooked up a QY70 and with the pattern recording paused I pressed play on Sundog and the QY70 started recording. Problem solved.
The only minor work-around I have to do is insert a blank pattern into Sundog because it naturally loops patterns and the QY70 only has an Overdub recording mode so it will double the note input as it loops. The blank pattern gives me time to stop recording before that happens.

All I have to do now is transfer all my Sundog ideas over to the QY's and start writing tunes again.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-70748558296909198012023-05-28T09:43:00.002+01:002023-05-28T09:43:54.855+01:00New Beginnings

It's Spring and there's a lot of changes happening.

Firstly I have a new job, one that I'm happy with. The beer barrel pond which is sprouting lots of bulrushes and my brambles which I'm hoping will produce a bumper crop of blackberries are both doing well.

The only bad thing is my box hedge which I've been shaping for 20 years has now succumbed to an invasion of Box Caterpillars and looks like it going to have to be replaced.

Such are the trials of gardening.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-78258509960673606532023-04-28T13:53:00.000+01:002023-04-28T13:53:44.139+01:00Changing The Narative

It's not in my nature to let people down.

I had to cancel an agency appointment for next week because I have accepted a full time job and as part of that process I needed to commit some time to that. I feel bad about letting down the work agency but in the last 8 months I have been trying to find a full time job with no success.
Other jobs that I did successfully find didn't turn out to be what was described at the interview stage and I had to decline the offers. For so long it seems that people are less than honest when it comes to giving accurate descriptions of work roles. I'm not sure why that is. It certainly isn't productive to have an employee find out that things aren't going to be as expected and waste time on time consuming interviews. I made myself a promise after my last experiences and that was to only work for a company that I had temped for, and liked or to only accept a job I really wanted.
The latter is the case this time around and I'm determined not to mess things up by letting other stuff get in the way.

And so I find myself in the position of letting someone down to pursue my own ambitions. While it still feels wrong I know it must be done this way. The job I had to leave in August last year was something I had been doing for the same company for 15 years. It was a hard blow to have been treated so unfairly after such a long commitment. I learned the hard way that for loyalty to my employer there was no such loyalty in return.

Maybe I should be more 'hard nosed' when it comes to decisions but I prefer to treat people fairly and in the same way that I would expect to be treated.
I do find that all too often, as mentioned above, my ethos is not reciprocated.
Maybe I should make myself another promise now and that should be to treat people in the way that they treat me, let them make the first move, but I don't think that I can change my attitude that readily.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-62471105745867612642023-04-25T13:53:00.002+01:002023-04-25T13:53:57.826+01:00A Little Too Much

It's said that too much of something can be a bad thing.

That's certainly the case with me these days with regard to reading manuals.
I seem to spend more time reading about things than actually using them. Instead of flicking through pages and pages of stuff I really don't need to know I messed around and added both the Melpa directory and a couple of Major Modes that I intend to use.

I have decided that the new space in my head can be filled with learning Emacs and trying to stay in that environment to complete other work. The idea being that it will do away with various other pieces of software that I use for individual tasks. I really could do with slimming down my software which in turn removes distractions and leaves me no option but to get on with things that need doing.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-56202943765020146022023-04-24T14:25:00.000+01:002023-04-24T14:25:51.039+01:00So What Happens Now?

For over 20 years I have been working on an encryption problem that has been stuck in my head.

It's only taken that long because I have only occasionally been able to work on it. Today sees the end of that long process. The work is done, the paper finished, printed and locked away until I decide what I'm going to do with it.
The terribly low-res image above it something I created to adorn the front of my work. It's ordered but random at the same time.

So what happens now?
I need something else to work on or dare I say finish? I started a novel many moons ago, got 5 chapters in and stopped. That's high on my list but I'm undecided at the moment. I need to empty my head of thoughts of my stream cipher and see how much space there is to expand into.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-5646884651364095332023-04-17T20:13:00.000+01:002023-04-17T20:14:00.740+01:00In The Garden

What I need at this point in time is an approachable modern text that I can work on without needing to learn something from scratch. Enter LibreOffice. I've used various components of this office suite before and I'm comfortable using it. I took time over the past weekend to explore its capabilities in depth to see if it could produce the kind of document that I want. The good news is that it is more than capable and I only have a few new things to learn.

I suppose that unless one uses office software on a daily basis its many abilities aren't often noticed. One uses it on a basic level using only the features that one needs and nothing else. When it comes to producing something a little more refined, something that is consistent throughout and designed well LibreOffice doesn't, for me at least, spring to mind. I would have thought that a DTP package might have been better suited to the task. My paper has a lot of tables and the ability to edit them in place is just one feature that I didn't know LibreOffice could perform. It's an extremely useful attribute.

I am now designing, correcting and formatting my document in the small amount of free time I have to do this work. LibreOffice has made that small amount of time much more productive.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-8264899156105327752023-03-08T16:29:00.000+00:002023-03-08T16:29:16.094+00:00Almost There

There have been many reasons why I haven't been here.

Over the past year work has been an on / off thing. Since late last year I've hit a real creative flow. I often find myself with the kind of creative block that puts me in a situation where I'm just preparing to do stuff, waiting around for inspiration.

It started when I picked up a pen and started drawing, more for something to do than an inspired choice of activity. From there it was like the floodgates opened. I started almost daily sketching and then I started writing tunes again. I was hoping to release a couple of tracks this year but now my first release will probably be a 4 track E.P.

On top of all that I'm actually writing the first draft of an encryption technique that I have been working on and refining for well over a decade. And then there's the fractals. Just a spare time thing but it's a great combination of math and art and is also quite relaxing. Add to that I'm alpha testing one of the apps I use so as you can see there's plenty going on.

And all that is just my free time. I've been working through this covid pandemic so I'm still away from home for hours everyday. It'll also soon be Spring so the garden will need my attention and this year I'm aiming for a bumper herb and tobacco crop.

So there you go. If you were wondering where I'd been, now you know. I'll be back here more often as these projects start getting released but I can't say when that'll be.
Hopefully it'll be soon.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-44220816427410578682020-11-28T03:56:00.005+00:002020-11-28T03:56:38.983+00:00The Art Of Nature

The older I get the more I am inclined to get in tune with nature.

It possibly has something to do with the fact that I'm heading for the ground and nature wants to make sure I'm not full of junk so that I decompose nicely. Hopefully that won't happen for some time but in getting in tune with the natural world my path into that state of mind is numbers. My greatest fascination is random numbers, they're everywhere in nature but there seems to be (most of the time) some kind of controlled logic behind them. There is proof that humans are poor at trying to be random while nature just does it, and well. Maybe getting old and 'losing your marbles' is nature's way of telling you that order isn't such a great ambition after all.

Either way, I'm back making fractals. They are for all intents pure math but they are also found in nature. Mother earth likes repeating herself, regularly. Humans seem to get into that routine also, wars, pandemics etc. It shouldn't be something to worry too much about but our race, the human race, seems not to mind that we're deleting too much of nature and ourselves to have anything left to repeat. It's high time our repetition was of doing nothing. Taking some time out, on a loop, and letting everything recover.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-59799475841145622102020-09-13T03:23:00.001+01:002020-09-13T03:23:37.604+01:00Going Forward In Reverse

I've just installed Windows 10 on to one of my laptops.

Unfortunately it's come to a stage where I needed a Windows computer of some kind to install updates to a few devices. While Linux has served me extremely well over the last decade it's unfortunate that manufacturers don't consider it an option. A lot of software works under Wine on Linux but not quite everything. This new installation will help me to configure a few pieces of equipment and that's about all it will do.

Having said that, it will allow me to explore a few things that have passed me by and to reconnect with a few pieces of software that I haven't used in years. Tech old and new will pushed to its full potential. I have been meaning to update the code plug for my digital transceiver for a couple of years now which also means I have to relearn how to write a code plug.

That project can stay on the back-burner for now.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-42682684192941825882020-08-03T04:45:00.000+01:002020-08-03T04:45:45.523+01:00Growing

It's been a long time since I've posted here.

There are as many reasons why I should have as to why I haven't. I know it's quite fashionable to add every detail of a process but I'd rather just produce an end result and get the conversation tracking backwards and forwards from that point.

In short, I've been in the garden making it look nice, it sort of does. It's a nice place to be with a cold beer and no phone. I'm still learning the finer details of Blender and Inkscape but nothing much to show really. The hardware studio was finished then I changed my mind and I bought a couple of new things so it needs re-ordering and cables all need to be re-routed so no music from there yet. Once it's running properly I have a patten that's waiting to be turned into a track.

I've just decided to remix a friends track, that's just a project file at the moment.

So there you are, I'm doing lots but nothing is done.

I think I need another week off to get up to date.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-6495975420267599482020-05-03T05:17:00.000+01:002020-05-03T05:17:17.358+01:00Time Enough

If only my real truck was this handsome.

I have once again spent more time than I should on trying to get a picture to work. This one sort of does so I'm leaving it there. I'm only doing this because I promised myself I would and now it's done.

My next little distraction is the same kind of thing but rendered in a comic style. I have dumb puns to make. The scenes will be set up in LeoCAD and then Toon rendered in Blender. This is where I want to be. It's a lot of effort but what else am I going to do until the next Bitwig Studio release. I really want to get my hands on the new arpeggiator.

Anyway, I'm off to bed, there's work tomorrow. Being a key worker is good but there's no time off for fun.

Until next weekend when it's a bank holiday.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-83788227866668074182020-04-19T03:40:00.000+01:002020-04-19T03:40:32.971+01:00It's Toon Time

This weekend I have mostly been playing with "Toon" shaders in Blender.

The Toon shaders give a model a more comic look which is very different from the photorealistic render of the last blog post.

I followed a YouTube tutorial to create the above shading and I'm pleased with the results. It looks quite sketchy which is the kind of effect I'm after. I've always wanted to make my own comics. Just short 3 panel things that reflect short instances in my life. I have enough experience with LeoCAD to build scenes and put Lego MiniFigure people in them to represent people I know. I'm even considering taking photos of friends and creating vector representations of their faces to add to the MiniFigure heads, just so that people recognise themselves.

It's all down to building the scenes now which will be a lot of fun.

You never know, you might spot yourself in one of my comics.

MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-7098923196958532032020-04-04T02:56:00.000+01:002020-04-04T02:56:40.786+01:00Going Nowhere And Getting There

This is my first attempt at 3D model compositing.

I'm quite pleased with the result, it's not perfect and I will get better but it at least looks how I imagined it would.

The model was made in LeoCAD and exported to Blender to be rendered with the shadow. I'm still on the move.
During the week I had one day off work due to Coronavirus but then it was back to work the next day. I'm a key worker in a key supply chain so the truck stays on the road even if in a reduced capacity.
My car passed its MOT also which means it's on the road for another year. This was very good news amid all the bad.
My 3D learning is gathering a little pace too. The above image, although like others posted here is a step forward. Importing LeoCAD .obj files never included the details printed on the figures or bricks. This has now been solved by importing the native .ldr file into Blender and exporting the .obj from there. That in itself was a task because I needed to add an addon to Blender and also add the LDraw library to the importer. A little trial and error got me there in the end.
My next task is to add LeoCAD files that have been rendered in Blender to photographs. I've watched a tutorial so I'll go through it again with Blender open this time.
Expect results very soon.MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-51380035056769821822020-03-22T04:27:00.000+00:002020-03-22T04:28:11.498+00:00Keep Smiling Through

While I was messing with my 3D software I thought I'd send my niece a picture to keep her smiling.
She is a qualified paramedic and working very hard through this Coronavirus pandemic.
It's easy to lose ones humour in times like these with shop shelves empty of everyday essentials and most people's social life all but shelved. I find it easy to amuse myself. I stay on nights at the weekend so my working week is filled with ideas for my free time. If I end up self isolating at any point I'll have plenty to do.
Hopefully you've have plenty to do also. I hope so. And while it's difficult at times, try to keep smiling.
It absolutely is the best medicine.MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18577934.post-2016119924207070612020-03-15T04:39:00.000+00:002020-03-15T04:39:18.210+00:00Where Next?

Where does your imagination take you?
Mine takes me to all kinds of places. At the moment it's learning 3D software so that I can create the things and places that only exist in my head. It's time to up my game now though. I'm going to spend the next month learning as much as I can about CAD software. It could be a useful skill in the future or it may just end up as something that benefits me.
I want to start work on another tune soon. I'm torn between doing what I do or trying something different. Maybe I could do both by collaborating, the thought has crossed my mind many times.
I'm definitely being imaginative with numbers and cryptography. I have lots of little bits to get working together although the right combination in the right order hasn't come to me yet.
It will. I'm still learning new tricks.MikiStrangehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17744907641122986122noreply@blogger.com0
